WHO Urges Support Amid Rapid Ebola Outbreak in Congo
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Bunia, eastern Congo, on Saturday to address a fast-spreading Ebola outbreak. As of now, there are 1,077 suspected cases and 246 deaths reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with nine cases and one death in Uganda. Tedros called for stronger international support and community engagement to combat the outbreak, which is driven by the Bundibugyo virus, lacking approved treatments or vaccines. Aid from the European Union has begun to arrive, and the US has pledged over $112 million in support. However, Doctors Without Borders warned that the response has not kept pace with the outbreak's rapid spread, urging for expanded testing and faster deployment of health workers. Travel restrictions have been imposed by several countries, including the US, which may hinder transparency in reporting cases.
