Panama Faces Aftershocks Following 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake
On Monday, a magnitude 6 earthquake struck Panama, following a 7.7 tremor on Friday. The latest quake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres, as authorities assessed damage from the earlier earthquake, which injured at least 27 people and damaged nearly 900 homes. Over 300 aftershocks have been recorded, with some reaching magnitudes of 6.1 and 6.6. The government declared a state of emergency to coordinate relief efforts, particularly in the provinces of Los Santos, Coclé, Veraguas, and Herrera. Transport services were disrupted, including temporary closures at the main international airport. No deaths have been reported, but officials caution that the toll may rise as assessments continue in remote areas.
