India, Denmark Expand Maritime Cooperation in Shipbuilding and Technology
India and Denmark are enhancing maritime cooperation, focusing on commercial and naval shipbuilding, port development, and maritime technologies. A feasibility study is underway to identify opportunities in shipbuilding, with plans for Danish defence companies to engage with Indian naval stakeholders. Approximately 95% of India's trade by volume is maritime, and the government aims for $139 billion investment under Sagarmala 2.0 to modernise the sector. India targets a 40-fold increase in shipbuilding output by 2047, from over 1,00,000 gross tonnes to about 4.5 million gross tonnes. Danish companies like Maersk, which handles about 20% of India's containerised trade, are already active in the Indian market, contributing to the development of a domestic shipbuilding ecosystem.
