Delhi Ends Segregation of Sex Workers in Prisons
The Delhi government has abolished the segregation of sex workers and brothel-keepers from other female prisoners in its jails. This decision follows a Supreme Court directive aimed at reducing stigma and promoting rehabilitation. Delhi and Himachal Pradesh are currently the only states to implement this recommendation. The ruling stems from a Supreme Court case that highlighted the need to treat sex workers as victims rather than offenders. The Delhi government has removed three specific provisions from its prison regulations that mandated this segregation. Similar discriminatory provisions have been identified in 16 other states, with some, including Maharashtra and Goa, proposing amendments. The matter remains under review by the Supreme Court.
