India Invests ₹5,000 Crore in Indigenous Aero-Engine Development
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced a ₹5,000 crore investment for developing indigenous aero-engine capabilities at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s Koraput division on October 6, 2026. This initiative is part of India's plan for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Singh highlighted the importance of mastering propulsion technology and the establishment of a high-thrust engine testing facility. HAL will also increase annual production of AL-31FP engines from 30 to 50, supported by a ₹335 crore investment. A second production line for Shakti engines, with a capacity of 100 engines annually, is set to be established by 2028-29. The Koraput division has produced 2,000 engines since its inception in 1964 and has overhauled more than 9,000 engines, contributing significantly to India's aerospace capabilities.
