Study Links Tropical Cyclones to Climate Patterns in Indian Ocean

A recent study published in Nature Communications highlights a potential increase in tropical cyclones originating near the Equator due to climate factors. The research indicates a 43% decrease in such cyclones from 1981-2010 compared to 1951-1980, attributed to a warmer phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Currently, the PDO is in a cooler phase, which may lead to more cyclones in the post-monsoon months. Additionally, an El Nino is developing, contributing to rainfall deficits of 7% in central India and 17% in southern India. The study emphasizes the complex interactions between the PDO and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which influence weather patterns in the region.
