Supreme Court Rejects Bail for Cyber Fraud Accused
On November 6, 2026, the Supreme Court ruled against granting bail to a cyber fraud accused, stating that cyber criminals should be imprisoned. Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized that unlike murderers, cyber fraudsters cannot be rehabilitated. The Court also mandated Standard Operating Procedures to combat cyber fraud and improve victim support, including time-bound refunds. A report from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre indicated a decline in complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, from 1,23,672 in 2024 to 16,377 by June 30, 2026. Currently, the e-Zero FIR mechanism is operational in 19 States, while 14 States have established their Cyber Crime Coordination Centres.
