CPI(M) Criticises Supreme Court's Verdict on Electoral Rolls

Updated 2 days ago: The focus shifted from the CPI(M)'s condemnation of the Supreme Court's decision regarding electoral rolls in West Bengal to the Supreme Court's ruling on the Election Commission's authority to conduct a special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, including details about the court's reasoning and the implications for electoral eligibility.

The Supreme Court has upheld the Election Commission's (EC) authority to conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. This decision follows a June 2025 order by the EC, which cited significant changes in electoral rolls over the past 20 years due to urbanisation and migration. Petitioners argued against the SIR's legitimacy, questioning the EC's powers and the process's compliance with electoral laws. The court ruled that the EC is empowered to conduct SIR for multiple constituencies, satisfying proportionality requirements and preserving procedural safeguards. It also affirmed the EC's authority to inquire into citizenship status for electoral eligibility, with any deletions subject to review under the Citizenship Act, 1955.
