CJI Surya Kant Highlights NHRC's Role in Protecting Human Rights
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant emphasized the judiciary's duty to protect constitutional rights during the NHRC's 33rd Foundation Day on October 12, 2026. He noted that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered over 24 lakh cases and disposed of more than 23 lakh, achieving a disposal rate exceeding 98%. Kant highlighted the importance of reaching marginalized individuals, such as undertrial prisoners and migrant workers, who often struggle to access justice. He also discussed the evolving interpretation of Article 21, which now encompasses the right to a dignified life, including access to safe drinking water. The CJI urged that both courts and human rights commissions must address systemic failures in protecting these rights.
