Bihar Opens 36 Barrage Gates as Nepal Floods Impact Gandak River
Bihar has opened all 36 gates of the Gandak Barrage in response to floodwaters from Nepal. By 11 pm, around 1.50 lakh cusecs of water had been released, the highest discharge recorded that day. The alert follows severe flash floods in Nepal, which have resulted in over 150 deaths and more than 750 people missing, including 133 Indian nationals. Authorities are monitoring vulnerable districts, with special vigilance in West Champaran, East Champaran, and Gopalganj. The situation is expected to remain normal, but continuous monitoring is in place. The floods originated after an earthquake struck Tibet, leading to a glacial outburst. Rescue and relief operations are being coordinated by the Bihar government, with National Disaster Response Force teams on standby.
