Cyclone Arnab Damage Increased by 33% Due to Climate Change
A study from Imperial College London's Grantham Institute found that Cyclone Arnab, which hit eastern India on October 28, caused 33% more economic damage due to climate change. The cyclone brought peak winds of 202 kilometres per hour and intense rainfall, severely impacting infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh. Researchers used the Imperial College Storm Model to compare current conditions with a pre-industrial climate. They estimated that approximately 25% of the total economic damage was directly attributable to climate change, with maximum wind speeds increasing by 5% and rainfall rates intensifying by 11% at landfall.
