CJI Advocates Energy Justice for Sustainable Development in India

Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant highlighted the importance of energy justice as a framework for India's growth during the International Conference on Sustainable Energy. He stated that development must align with ecological sustainability and emphasized the need for a balance between economic progress and environmental protection. Justice Kant outlined four pillars of energy justice: affordability, accessibility, equity, and inclusiveness, asserting that clean energy should not be a privilege for a select few. He also noted the Electricity Act, 2003, as pivotal in shaping the energy sector but called for better utilization of existing mechanisms to enhance regulatory effectiveness. The CJI underscored that both development and environmental protection are enshrined in Article 21 of the Constitution, advocating for an integrated approach to development that prioritizes long-term ecological stewardship.
