China's Type 004 Aircraft Carrier Construction Accelerates Ahead of 2027 Launch
China is advancing the construction of its fourth aircraft carrier, the Type 004, which may be launched as early as 2027. This vessel could be China's first nuclear-powered carrier and is being built at Dalian Shipyard. Current estimates suggest it will measure approximately 336 to 339 metres in length, potentially surpassing the US Navy's largest carriers. The Type 004 is expected to have a displacement nearing 110,000 tonnes and will feature an electromagnetic aircraft launch system. China's navy plans to expand its fleet from three to nine carriers by 2035, indicating a significant ramp-up in shipbuilding efforts. The development of the Type 004 aligns with China's broader military ambitions, including advancements in sixth-generation fighter jets.
