India Encourages Shift to Alternative Energy Amid Rising Oil Prices
The Indian government is urging households and industries to adopt alternative energy sources as global crude oil prices exceed $100 per barrel. Concerns over LPG supply have prompted recommendations for consumers to switch to electric cookstoves and piped natural gas (PNG). Industries reliant on commercial LPG are also encouraged to transition to PNG and electric furnaces. The government has increased commercial LPG supply by 70% and tied up cargoes to ensure steady domestic availability. The anticipated power demand may rise to 271GW this summer, up from 242GW last fiscal. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency estimates that increased electric cooktop adoption could add 13-27GW to peak demand. Additionally, the government is committed to enhancing the use of biofuels, with E20 blending already in effect.
