India Approves ₹70,000-Crore Deal for Six Advanced Submarines

India's finance ministry has approved a ₹70,000-crore deal for the construction of six advanced conventional submarines under Project-75I. The proposal will soon be considered by the Cabinet Committee on Security. The submarines will be built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in Mumbai, with the first expected to be delivered seven years after the contract signing. The project aims for a minimum of 45% indigenisation, increasing to 60% by the sixth submarine. This deal aligns with India's goal of achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing by 2047, coinciding with the centenary of its independence. The navy is currently modernising its fleet, with around 60 warships under construction at various Indian yards.
