India Bans Paraquat Dichloride Herbicide Linked to Thousands of Deaths

The Central government has announced a ban on paraquat dichloride, a herbicide associated with numerous fatalities from self-harm, homicides, and accidents in India. This decision follows similar bans by several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Kerala. The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare cited recommendations from an Experts Committee and the Registration Committee, which highlighted health risks and a lack of antidote for poisoning. Paraquat dichloride is already banned or restricted in over 70 countries. The notification initiates a 30-day period for public suggestions and objections, with states instructed to implement the ban under the Insecticides Act of 1968. The chemical has been linked to an increase in self-harm cases, exacerbated by its availability through online retailers.
