Supreme Court Questions CBSE's Classification of English in Language Scheme

The Supreme Court on July 14, 2026, examined the CBSE's classification of English as a 'non-native language' in its three-language scheme. Justice Joymalya Bagchi raised concerns about the term 'native', questioning its colonial implications. The CBSE's recent circular differentiates between 'Bharatiya Bhashas' and non-native languages, requiring Class 9 students to study at least two native languages. Senior advocates highlighted the challenges of resource availability, noting that only three of the 22 Scheduled languages have textbooks ready. The court issued a notice regarding the impact of the scheme on students and scheduled the next hearing for July 22. The CBSE acknowledged potential resource issues but suggested interim staffing solutions. The three-language policy is part of the National Education Policy, 2020, aimed at promoting multilingualism.
