India Considers Strategic Fuel Programme to Enhance Energy Security
India is evaluating a strategic fuel programme to boost its energy security, potentially adding 28 MT of crude oil, 9 MT of LNG, and 4 MT of LPG storage. Currently, India has 5.33 MT of underground crude storage, with 3.37 MT in use, and minimal LPG capacity of 0.14 MT. Notably, India lacks operational underground natural gas storage. The proposed reserves aim to cover nearly two months of crude and LNG demand and six weeks of LPG demand. The programme, estimated at $42 billion, is still under consideration and would require significant investment in infrastructure and inventory management. Effective energy security will depend on seamless access, transportation, and replenishment of these reserves during crises.
