Demolition in Telangana Displaces Over 1,800 Residents from Bhoodan Lands

On February 24, a demolition drive in Vinoba Navodaya Colony, Telangana, left more than 1,800 people homeless as nearly 600 structures were razed. The operation targeted unauthorized constructions on Bhoodan lands, which were originally donated for the poor in the 1950s. Residents, many of whom are daily wage labourers, expressed despair over the loss of their homes and livelihoods. The demolition has sparked political controversy, with various parties condemning the action and calling it insensitive. Local authorities claimed the drive was conducted legally, citing fake documents and illegal allotments. Displaced families are currently housed in temporary shelters, facing uncertainty about their future and the promise of compensation or housing assistance from the government.
