Bangladesh Requests India's Extradition of Ousted PM Sheikh Hasina
Bangladesh's interim government has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity. The request, sent on November 23, follows a verdict delivered on November 17. Hasina, 78, has been in hiding in India since her ousting in August 2024. The extradition request marks the third attempt to secure her return. Bangladesh's foreign ministry stated that India has an 'obligatory responsibility' under a bilateral treaty to facilitate her extradition. The political situation in Bangladesh remains tense, with violence reported during election campaigning ahead of the February 2026 elections. India's foreign ministry acknowledged the verdict but did not comment on the extradition request.
