Supreme Court Allows Temple Construction in Ayodhya, Allocates Land for Mosque
On Saturday, the Supreme Court permitted the construction of a temple at the site of the Babri Masjid and directed the government to allocate a five-acre plot for Muslims to build a mosque in Ayodhya. The unanimous judgment, led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, mandated the Centre to create a trust for managing the temple property. The disputed site, which spans 67.73 acres, was acquired by the Centre in 1993. The court noted that the Babri Masjid's demolition in 1992 was a violation of the rule of law and recognized the historical claims of both Hindus and Muslims. The Sunni Central Waqf Board was instructed to receive the mosque plot simultaneously with the temple's property transfer. The court also dismissed claims of exclusive possession by the Waqf Board and the Nirmohi Akhara, while acknowledging the need for their involvement in property management.
