Punjab Opposes Centre's Proposal to Regulate Chandigarh Under Article 240

The central government has proposed to bring Chandigarh under Article 240, allowing the President to legislate for the Union Territory. This move has sparked significant backlash from Punjab's political parties, including AAP, Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal, who argue it undermines Punjab's historical claim to the city. The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, set for introduction in the Winter Session of Parliament starting December 1, aims to align Chandigarh with other Union territories without legislatures. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and other leaders have condemned the proposal, asserting that Chandigarh is integral to Punjab. The North American Punjabi Association has also criticized the decision, calling it legally questionable and insensitive to Punjab's rights. Chandigarh has been administered by the Punjab governor since June 1, 1984.
