Kashmir University Screens Books for 'Anti-India' Content Amid Controversy
On July 7, two books published under the Samagra Shiksha scheme in Jammu and Kashmir were identified as containing inappropriate content. The books, which profiled separatist leaders and referred to J&K as 'India Occupied', were withdrawn following public outcry, with 251 copies already distributed to schools. The J&K administration cited negligence in the approval process and suspended eight officials, including a coordinator and academic officer. A First Information Report was filed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act due to the potential for law and order issues. The government plans to implement new rules for educational materials to ensure compliance with Indian laws and prevent the promotion of separatism or terrorism. Scholars have expressed concern that these actions may limit academic freedom and the scope of scholarship in the region.
