24% of Migratory Species Face Extinction, Urgent Action Needed
An interim report reveals that 24% of migratory species are at risk of extinction. The findings, presented ahead of the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals in Brazil, indicate that 26 species have moved to higher extinction risk categories. While some species have shown improvement, the overall conservation status is deteriorating. The report highlights threats such as habitat loss and avian influenza, which has caused significant mortality among various bird populations. Of the 1,200 CMS-listed species reassessed, 34 have been re-categorised, with 26 facing increased risk. The report identifies 9,372 Key Biodiversity Areas, but 47% remain unprotected.
