Amit Shah Launches Digital Tools for 2027 Census Preparation
Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched four digital tools on March 5, 2026, to support India's first fully digital Census, set to begin on April 1. The tools include the Houselisting Block Creator for digital mapping, the HLO mobile app for data collection, a Self-enumeration portal for online household information submission, and the Census Management and Monitoring System for overseeing operations. The ₹11,718 crore Census will include caste enumeration and will be conducted in two phases: houselisting from April to September 2026 and population enumeration in February 2027. The initiative aims to streamline data collection and enhance citizen participation, with 3.2 million field functionaries expected to use the new systems.
