Amit Shah Addresses CBCI Concerns Over Foreign Contribution Bill
Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) on July 10, 2026, to discuss the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. Shah assured that the Bill is not discriminatory against Christian NGOs, which receive nearly 15% of foreign donations. He noted that out of ₹17,000 crore in foreign donations last year, around ₹3,000 crore was allocated to Christian bodies. The Minister emphasized that ongoing violence in Manipur is an ethnic conflict, urging the CBCI to promote peace. He advised reporting any aggression against the church to the police and assured that the Bill's provisions would not be applied retrospectively, allowing a 12-month appeal period for affected parties. The CBCI raised concerns about specific provisions in the Bill, including restrictions on proselytisation and the management of assets from foreign funds.
