MHA Issues Guidelines for Detection and Deportation of Illegal Foreigners
The Ministry of Home Affairs has amended the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order, 1964, empowering district magistrates across India to establish tribunals for determining the status of individuals staying illegally. This change allows individuals to approach these tribunals, which were previously limited to state administration referrals. Following the final National Register of Citizens published on July 30, 2022, nearly 40 lakh people were excluded, with 36 lakh filing claims against their exclusion. The amended order also enables district magistrates to refer cases of around 4 lakh residents who have not filed claims to the tribunals for citizenship verification. The MHA recently sanctioned approximately 1,000 tribunals in Assam to address these matters.
