Congress Calls for Scrapping Agnipath Scheme, Citing National Security Risks

The Congress party has demanded the scrapping of the Agnipath recruitment scheme, claiming it undermines national security and disrupts military training. Introduced in June 2022, the scheme recruits personnel below officer rank for four years, with only 25% eligible for regular service. On November 4, the Union Cabinet approved a two-year extension for the remaining 75% of recruits. Congress leader Colonel (Retd.) Rohit Chaudhary argued that the scheme limits training opportunities and creates unequal treatment for Agniveers compared to regular soldiers. He also highlighted the need for lifelong pensions for families of Agniveers killed in service. The party has launched a renewed campaign, “Jai Jawan Part Two,” against the scheme, asserting it was a flawed decision by the BJP-led government.
