Activists Urge Kerala High Court for Access to Breast Cancer Drug
Activists have written to Chief Justice Soumen Sen of the Kerala High Court, urging an expedited final hearing on access to Ribociclib, a critical breast cancer medication. The case has been pending since June 2022 and has been listed 57 times without a hearing since January 21, 2023. Ribociclib costs ₹78,468.75 per month, making it unaffordable for many patients. The Working Group on Access to Medicines and Treatment highlights that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India, with over 1.9 lakh new cases reported in 2022. The group argues that delays in adjudicating access to essential medicines violate patients' rights under Article 21 of the Constitution. The case is now scheduled for hearing on July 15, 2026.
