India Considers ₹3.25 Lakh Crore Deal for 114 Rafale Jets

Updated 3 days ago: The Indian Defence Ministry's evaluation has changed to the Defence Procurement Board's approval of the proposal, and the next step involves proceeding to the Defence Acquisition Council for further clearance, along with the addition of ongoing discussions for localising Rafale production and the context of French President Emmanuel Macron's upcoming visit to India.

The Defence Procurement Board has approved the Indian Air Force's proposal to purchase 114 Rafale jets from France. This decision aims to enhance the IAF's combat fleet, which currently operates 30 fighter squadrons, below the authorised strength of 42.5. The acquisition is expected to cost around ₹3.25 lakh crore and will involve local production of 96 jets in India, with 18 delivered in fly-away condition. The proposal will now proceed to the Defence Acquisition Council for further clearance. This development coincides with ongoing discussions for localising Rafale production and is ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to India. The IAF previously acquired 36 Rafale jets at ₹59,000 crore and has plans for 26 Rafale Marine jets for the navy, with deliveries expected between 2029 and 2031.
